Hibernia does that make three of us now?? wheee Yes! The Dutchies are taking over!!

radiosweetheart- 09-27-2007

I'm 23, from the Netherlands, and work as an administrative assistent (where I sure do put my MA to good use *cough*). Howdy Lin! Welcome! Glad you found your way to us and look forward to talking about House and stuff with you. I feel your pain. I have an MA, too and I make my living (if you can call it that) as an office drone. I'm pretty sure that the degrees aren't in administrative assistance-but I have come to find out there's no point in having dreams or trying to better yourself. Just take a typing course, learn how to use Excel and look forward to a life of sitting at a desk under florescent lights. And welcome again! We're a cheery, fun-filled bunch here!

This might be random and considered "board on boards" or whatever, but can I just ask.....who on earth are all of those people commenting on the boards at the other place? I took a scroll through some of the "Alone" threads and not only are they not nearly as insightful as normal (no shock there) but I haven't a clue who 99% of those usernames are. Have they been bussed in from other forums? Is such a thing even possible in a virtual world? Okay, HHOWers. Fess up if you've changed an identity over there. :-)

Thanks for the welcome, guys :D And yay for Dutchies! You guys have House on right now, too? I'm only half watching though (cause I've seen it before). I feel your pain. I've only worked there for a few weeks, and I'm only getting my actual degree (you know, the piece of paper) on Tuesday, so it's not like I can expect to get a stellar job right away. This way I'm earning money, and gaining some valuable working experience to go onto my resume! I mean, I may have an MA, but a month ago I didnt even know how to send a fax. Now I do, go me :p

Hey, guys, I have no idea what you got your MAs in, but just wanted to say to keep the faith despite working as an admin asst. at the moment. Whatever it is you really want to do, just start doing it however you can or pursuing it in whatever way you can, and if you've got any talent whatsoever plus a little luck or divine beneficence, it will happen. It took me over a decade to build a real career once I'd finished my degrees, but the slog was worth it in the end. The trick, I think, is to figure out what you really want to do and then take the necessary steps to get there, one by one. It also helps to find people who'll have faith in you, which requires actually expressing your goals out loud and letting them help you achieve them -- which most people gladly will, I've found. Good luck getting out of AA hell, and keep the faith.

Thanks jj1963-it's good to hear that sometimes (most times?) it takes awhile to get where you're supposed to be. Once in awhile a good 'snap out of it!' is needed and you did that with grace and style. Sulking doesn't get anything accomplished. As much fun as it can be at times... And just for an idea of what kind of madness I have-my degree(s) are in anthropology and folklore. I love a challenge.

Fess up if you've changed an identity over there. :-) It's not just you, Bailey, I noticed that too. Strange, huh? Maybe we've actually entered an alternate dimension that was created when HHOW was formed - kind of a Schrodinger's cat sort of thing. And somehow, somewhere, some part of us is still posting over there...

281Apple- 09-27-2007

Thanks for welcome! ITA this is a great place. I am really happy to be here, everyone is so nice. And I just gotta ask, Schrodinger's cat? What is that?

blue- 09-27-2007

And I just gotta ask, Schrodinger's cat? What is that? Okay, I'm totally going to explain it wrong, but here goes: Basically, it's a thought experiment about how quantum theory would work on an 'everyday' level, rather than at the 'quantum' level, which is very, very small. So, one principle in QT says (sort of) that certain aspects of these particles can never be measured without the interference of the observer, so they actually exist in two states simultaneously. Yep, it's crazy, but apparently true, hence the whole idea that parallel universes and such exist is gaining more acceptance. Anyway, to the cat! So Schrodinger was trying to point out how dumb this idea was, so he made up a story where a cat is locked inside a box with a vial of poison gas that will either be opened or not depending on whether a particle decayed (a quantum-level process). So either it decays and the cat is poisoned or it doesn't and the cat lives. But the thing is, if the particle exists in both states (decayed and undecayed) until we actually observed it, that means that the cat also must be both dead and alive at the same time. Or until someone opens the box and looks. :?

blue, So if i am understanding this right, the theory is that the very act of observing a thing changes the thing being observed? Also, wow - you are seriously smart. and just wow

bailey- 09-27-2007

blue, So if i am understanding this right, the theory is that the very act of observing a thing changes the thing being observed? I thought that was a layman's understanding of the Heisenberg principle. Or why you can never really understand the Gorillas in the Mist.

blue, So if i am understanding this right, the theory is that the very act of observing a thing changes the thing being observed? Also, wow - you are seriously smart. and just wow Hee, I'm not that smart - this stuff hurts my brain  But, you're sort of right: I think it's more that we can't actually observe the dual nature of the particle because it's nature is all based on probabilities of each state existing. So as soon as we observe it in one state or the other, the probabilities collapse and it exists only in that state.
