I believe that House's undergraduate major was not your typical pre-med major, although he took all the usual pre-med courses. I believe he was a double or maybe even triple major in some combination of astronomy, history, anthropology, philology and/or music.
I base this on the character's insatiable curiosity and the fact that pre-meds in the '70s (I wasn't one, but I was an undergraduate) were encouraged to pursue studies outside biology/anatomy/physiology because med schools were looking for well-rounded individuals (hopefully they still are!).
