Okay, here is a loosely translated version of the first page of the first interview. It wasn't too difficult but I'm not up on my idioms anymore. :( (Why am I doing this? I was a mere French major. Where's warycary? ) Seriously, though, don't consider any of this verbatim. All bizarre turns of phrase are mine. It's coming through the human Babelfish.
AlloCiné Séries : Tout d'abord félicitations pour l'excellente audience de l'épisode post-Super Bowl...
Jennifer Morrison : Oh, je ne sais même pas quelle audience il a réalisé !
First of all, congratulations on the excellent audience for the post-Super Bowl episode!Oh, I don't even know how many people watched!
32 million viewers!
Oh, that's great!
There's more...but I'm kind of exhausted and the paragraphs are long. Someone else can take a crack at it. :D
How does it feel to have drawn such a big audience?
It's really exciting! But to be honest, I didn't see it. I was already in bed and I didn't think about it. Now that you've given me the numbers, it's an amazing feeling. (that's sort of approximate)
Before we get to talking about House, a little question about Star Trek, directed by JJ Abrams and in which you will play Winona Kirk...Unfortunately, I can't tell you anything. We've all signed confidentiality agreements.
The end of the writers' strike is near. You must be impatient to get back to work. Have you already been contacted about shooting? Do you have any news?
(note: this interview took place on February 6, before the lifting of the strike was announced) For the moment, I haven't heard anything but rumors. The producers and writers will have a verbal agreement. Everything has to be put into writing and everyone has to vote on the deal. I don't know how long that will take. Luckily, I have the impression that everyone is optimistic on the outcome of this conflict. I hope we can get back to working together quickly. We all want this to end well for everyone.
What have you been doing during your time off?
I was lucky to be able to do Star Trek. Then I took advantage of the time off to travel a little and spend some time with my family in Chicago. I spent the New Year in Greece, it was extraordinary. Then I did some things that I've never had time to do. That's been a real luxury. I learned to surf several years ago for a series, and I took the opportunity to relearn. I've always been drawn to boxing, so I signed up with a gym to train and practice a little. I love boxing! (laughs) And this evening I will be joining other artists at a hospital to read books to sick children and paint with them. I'm not really a painter but the most important thing is to create something, to spend time with them. I've been wanting to do this for years and I finally have the time to do it. Otherwise, I've been making renovations in my house which are almost finished. In short, I've been really busy! (laughs) I've finally been able to do what I didn't have time to do because we work so much on the show.
What is your favorite season of House to date?
The third. It was very interesting for Cameron and that's a real pleasure for an actress.
What is the question you get asked most often since House began?
What's it like to act with Hugh Laurie? (laughs)
The relationship between Gregory House and Cameron is very complex. Sometimes one has the impression that they understand each other perfectly and sometimes that they can't stand each other. You had evoked an impossible love between them...
Whatever happens between them, you can't help but notice the incredible chemistry between them. Sometimes that looks like mutual fascination. She wants to take care of him, he's intrigued by her. They seem to have no control over their emotions (...I have no idea what the idiom here is. Something about not being able to bring logic into it?) Their relationship seems impossible but there is something strong, direct between them, which exists in spite of everything. It's a great part to play for an actor. A purely medical scene can transform into something entirely different. She can in reality be talking about something elses, thanks simply to the chemistry between the two characters, between House and Cameron. There will always be underlying tension between them.
Each character on the show has their faults, is handicapped by dysfunctions. They're all a little mad in their way...
Every one is held back, inadequate. Each in their own way. All the characters on the show are alone, for one reason or another. Each one has been hurt and kept it to themselves. They all have difficulties in finding love or simply to adapt. For me, it's interesting to see these six characters who are at their core damaged by personal troubles change and work together.
Hugh Laurie succeeds in perfectly imitating the American accent. Does he ever speak with a British accent?
He never speaks with a British accent on the set. He only brings it out on the weekends or for interviews. (laughs) Incidentally, it's very strange to hear him speak in those cases. I always feel like he's faking the British accent! (laughs)
What are your favorite shows?
The Wonder Years! And more recently I really liked the first season of Heroes. I haven't seen all of the second one yet. I'm a big fan of Battlestar Galactica. That series is truly fantastic. Although I wasn't always, I've become a fan of science fiction. In another genre, I also really like Weeds. I've rarely seen a series as funny as The Office. For the past few months, in fact since a friend loaned me Jules et Jim, I've been watching a lot of French films.
Which ones?
I'm in the middle of a Francois Truffaut phase. I just watched Jules et Jim, Baisers volés... I also recently discovered Belle de Jour, 37°2 le matin and A bout de souffle, of which I've become a devotee. It's my favorite film. I almost forgot, I just saw Ressources humaines and that film was simply magnificent. The story enthralled me and I was amazed by the actors. I couldn't imagine how much that film would touch me. No one makes films like the French!
What memories do you have of "Dawson's Creek", in which you played Melanie Shea Thompson?
A truly very fun experience in a series that's become a classic. I played Melanie, who had Pacey head over heels in two episodes. The crew, like the actors, were fantastic. Joshua Jackson is really a great guy and an excellent actor. I run into him from time to time and it's always good to see him again.
And your experience in Touched by an Angel?
(laughs) I only did one episode! Very honestly as an actor, this kind of series is interesting because the episodes rest so much on the guest-stars In the end that was a really good experience. The character I played was stricken with cancer. I did a lot of research to know how people in her condition lived, worked.. And then I found that the love she felt for her husband was simply beautiful. Even if it's not a television genre I particularly appreciate, as an actor, the roles are interesting to play. (That's not exactly what she said, but I wasn't familiar with the idiom they used.)

Well done, vita! You clearly have many hidden talents!
I like this quote:
Each character on the show has their faults, is handicapped by dysfunctions. They're all a little mad in their way...

I guess the newbies don't even factor into Jen's thought process. I'd like to say that it's because the French haven't seen season 4 yet, but the reporter is clearly reciting facts (Superbowl viewing audience, etc) that the French audience couldn't possibly care about. Then again, maybe this publication was meant for the French Canadians? If that's the case, then I revert to my previous statement and laugh at how little Jen considers the newbies.
BTW, this reporter did their homework. Who honestly gives a shit about anyone's guest starring role on Touched By An Angel? WTF?
vitawash99- 02-13-2008
Indeed they haven't, Season 3 is still airing in France. (Which was in a parentheses somewhere and I meant to put it in.)
The second page has a "Spoiler alert" for the fourth season. Jennifer says something very polite, which I am now too lazy to correctly translate, about how in the first half of the season she had more free time but she missed working with OE and JS.
DOB1234- 02-13-2008
Thanks very much Vita!
Jennifer is boxing!!?? Hugh's madness is spreading. Now if he ever gets RSL into the ring I'll flip.

Oh no! I don't want my bb RSL getting hurt. Someone think of the poor theater geek. :)

That's an interesting take on the relationship. I agree that Cameron appears to have no control over her emotions, but I haven't seen House having no control over his in regard to Cameron. I don't mean by that that he has no emotions about Cameron--he definitely is at the least fond of her. Of course, she's talking to an audience who haven't reached the end of season three yet, when Cameron's feelings do evolve, and House doesn't lose control over his emotions over her relationship with Chase, despite being invited to do so. Perhaps she's just being savvy and withholding major plotpoints.

He's too pretty to go boxing ;)

He's too pretty to go boxing
I'd be scared tiny little Jennifer would kick his ass. (I adore him but he's someone whose personality seems less "I'm a jock!" and more "The jocks used to beat me up!")

He's too lazy for boxing too.

I've learned not to take anything shippy that JM or LE says too seriously. I think they want more out of their characters relationships with House than what's actually there. That's not to say there isn't some truth to what they say but I think they exaggerate just a tad, perhaps it's just to please the part of the audience that ships them, I don't know. I just don't pay the shippy/chemistry/feelings parts of interviews seriously anymore.
loreliah- 02-14-2008
If someone still wants the translation for the rest of the interview, I can try my hand at it later today. French is my mother tongue (is that how you say it??)
I agree, I find JM's answers interesting. I've always seen the chemistry and the "feelings" between the two but I am happy that JM didn't go the "omg their love is so canon" path. It's all in the subtelty of it.
Poeia- 02-14-2008
"Mother tongue" is exactly right and I'm stunned that English is not your first language. There isn't a grammatical or spelling error in it.
And we'd love to have the rest of the translation.
ETA: Vitawash, we've got oufti and loreliah who are both French. warycary's parents are French. And you were a French major. It looks like we have the depth and talent here to get it translated. (And you gave us a great taste of what the whole thing thing will say when it's done.

The second half of the sentence, which I couldn't translate, might help that make more sense...or change its meaning entirely. I think it says something about logic or reason. *flails* but I just don't know.
Oh, s'il vous plait, loreliah!
Ranee- 02-14-2008
vita, do you mean this sentence
Ils ne semblent avoir aucun contrôle sur leurs émotions jusqu'à ce que la raison s'en mêle !
"They don't appear to have control over their emotions until reason interferes". Idiomatically in English, I think "reason butts in" is the closest - the sense is that rationality trumps whatever emotional impulses they have & maybe in a way that is emotionally frustrating or unwanted at that.
I think that does kind of fit some of the earlier control issues for House with s1 Cameron, but not necessarily later when I think he's less emotionally engaged.
loreliah- 02-14-2008
Hmm, well, I'm never perfect, but thank you Poeia! All thanks to my hard work on it a few years ago. I can't say I'm that perfect when I am speaking, but still. A work in progress, as they say.
Here goes the translation, for the second part:
Q: When you are preparing for a part, do you tend to focus on your instinct or do some research?
A: It's a mix of the two. I trust my instinct, sometimes too much, which causes me trouble! (laughs) But I like to take in the universe in which my character evolves. When I started working on House, I didn't really study the medical aspect of the series, but I read a lot of books written by doctors sharing their experiences. To be filled with the desire to save people and knowing that nobody has that capacity, it's a fascinating theme. How can one live with the idea that you are holding someone's life in your hands? That is part of my approach. I've played a lot of different parts and characters, really different from each other. When I had to play an FBI agent, I read a lot of books on secret services (CIA) and on the fact of being a woman in that situation. I try to take every information I can on the environment my character will be in and what consequences this environment will have on the character. My instinct helps me to create the character.
Q: When did you realise you wanted to become an actress?
A: As far back as I can remember: since forever! (laughs) I don't know where it's coming from but it was always in me. My parents have always been supportive, including in kindergarten where I was convinced I was an actress! (laughs) I went on the stage for the first time when I was 5. I've always wanted to be an actress without really knowing why. It makes me really happy and I feel like I am at home on the stage, like I am really, profoundly alive. As soon as I can be on the stage, I try to be. To play is my way of being in sync with the world. To understand the behaviors and interpret them, to feel and express emotions, to meet people and environments which I wouldn't have the opportunity to meet otherwise, it is my way of taking grasp of this world. Personally, it helps me grow and evolve. Thanks to comedy, you learn so much! Some time ago, I had to learn to sail, surf and other things in the same year! It's always great to have the opportunity to learn such things. It's cool! (laughs)
Spoilers (for the beginning of season 4)
Q: At the beginning of season 4 of House, Cameron, Foreman and Chase are not present as much as they used to be. How do you feel about letting other actors and characters take center stage?
A: It's really interesting and it is becoming even more interesting now that it is more stable in House's team. During the first 12 episodes, House is fighting to build his new team. Now that that is behind us, I can't wait to see what will happen. Personally, not having to film that much has allowed me to do other things in parallel, like play other roles. Of course, I miss working with Omar Epps and Jesse Spencer because for 3 years we spent so much time together. It's sometimes strange to be separated like this and working each in our little corner. Each time we meet on the set, we can't help but fall in each other's arms! (laughs)
End spoilers
Q: Last question: have you ever visited France?
A: Of course! I've been to Paris two or three times as a tourist. I also came for Fashion Week. I was never able to visit the rest of the country, though.
There you go!
Second interview (TVMag one):
Q: The WGA strike forced you to take a time off (vacation)...
A: I took advantage of it by playing in the Star Trek movie. I've traveled to Chicago to see my family and I celebrated New Year's day in Greece. I did what I didn't have time to do normally like surfing or practising my boxing.
Q: How is your character evolving in the 3rd season?
A: Allison is growing, she gains strength and character and doesn't hesitate to give her opinion. She also confronts House more and more.
Q: What exactly is the nature of their relation?
A: It's a tortuous relationship. They have feelings for each other but never admit them. Allison tries to convince herself that she is not in love. I think this situation is a dead end, there will always be chemistry between them, they can't deny it.
Q: What do you think of Hugh Laurie?
A: He's very talented and very funny. I am really lucky to work everyday with him, it is the best comedy (acting) school in the world. He's such a great actor and raises the bar so high that we have to work to get to his level.
Q: Isn't it difficult to play with Jesse Spencer since you two are separated?
A: Not at all! We've always loved working together and when we were engaged, we've always separated our professionnal from our private life. Things go the same way now.
Q: During the 3rd season, your characters get together...
A: It will even go in the 4th season. It's a situation that can appear to be weird, but it isn't for us because there isn't any animosity between us.
DrSpaceman- 02-14-2008
I guess that's definite confirmation that not only are Chase and Cameron still together but that Jesse and Jennifer aren't (re: speculation that they might still date, if not be engaged).
