Yes you may. There have been a few animated avatars, but not many.
If it's larger than 100x100 pixels or bigger than 34 KB, Forumer (our host) won't accept it.
I don't know if this is the place to post this. But do you guys have any control over the ads that are shown? The 'evony' ads really bother me.. they are really revealing and pretty much nsfw, imo. If I'm the only one this bothers then I understand its not a big deal.
If you have the option to use Firefox install AdBlock Plus and you won't see any ads at all. I've always used Adblock and am consistently surprised when I log onto a public computer that the site has ads.
Otherwise, I don't think we have any control over what ads are shown.

Ok, thanks for the speedy reply and suggestion. =)
Every so often I like to look up a particular user and check out their earlier posts. I go to the Memberlist page and access the list in alphabetical order.
If the username is near the beginning or end alphabetically I'm fine, but if the name is somewhere in the middle it takes halfway to forever to go through page after page of users to get to the one I want. The only way I know how to do this is to scroll down to the bottom of the page, click on the next page number, wait for the new page to load, scroll down again, etc, etc.
Am I missing something here? Is there a quick and simple way to do this?
No. It makes me crazy too. You can select a first letter in the admin panel, but that's it.
What I do is sort the list alphabetically then go to page 2. The URL will be:
http://houseofwhining.com/memberlist.php?mode=username&order=ASC&start=20
Change the "20" at the end to 240 or 380 -- anything divisible by 20 and it will jump ahead. (e.g. If you change it to 520, you will jump to page 26.)
More of a request than a problem, but can we encourage people to link to off-site articles/reviews/whatever rather than just copy and paste? (Unless it's a site behind a paywall or not accessible to certain regions.)
No 1) Just copying -- even with a provided "source" link -- is in a very gray area in terms of copyright infringement. You're taking intellectual property created by a person for a specific site and placing it elsewhere without compensation.
No. 2) Those sites, especially an EW or TV Guide or even blogcritics, pay their people to find out and write about stuff. They make the money to pay those people with money raised by selling ads and those ads are based on number of page views. When we just copy & paste, we interrupt the flow of their business model. A couple of lines from a review or sample of what the story says is fine, but the whole article is not.
No. 3) Yes, I know. "It's the Internet! Information is free!" It's also rude. Like I said it's one thing if it's behind a paywall (which obviously has its own issues which I won't get into here) or non-accessible, but a one-line sumup -- for example, "Ausiello has casting spoilers about Cuddy's Mom" and a link will still get people the info they want, for free.
No. 4) For people who like to limit their exposure to spoilers, but still like to see promo photos and the like, a link rather than a cut & paste job allows us to decide whether to click the link. If we know it's an Ausiello spoiler, we may want to avoid. If the link says: "Spoilery review" we can avoid it. When it's just cut and paste, I end up having to avert my eyes and hope I don't actually see too much before I can backbutton. This also reduces continued exposure every time you open that page and have to quickly scam past it.
FWIW I really like Namaste's suggestions above.
But it may not be worth much since I think my last post balled up the S7.3 ep thread. Plus I have two posts in a row because I decided to quote Poeia's post. Anyway. Apologies.
So, can we have a Martha M. Masters thread/Amber Tamblyn thread now? It'd be MMM Good.
I Barely Know You: Recurring, Non-Permanent Characters
Other than Stacy, none of the multi-episode characters got their own thread -- Vogler, Tritter, Amber, etc. (Okay, Brenda did, but that's because she's sort of our mascot.)
