Gobblin- 02-03-2009

Argh, worst episode ever! I loathed Cuddy, Boreteen...does just that. Kutner moaning and really who gives a flying poop about Taub. Thank god for Wilson, fab as ever. Well Hugh was naturally great, but that goes without saying. I want 13/Foreman & Cuddy's baby arc finished soon (well and the Huddy arc) or i may have to stop watching live :( I feel i'll be joining Bailey in the bitterness thread soon.

Well, it's the episode where they reveal that Cuddy is dangerously psychotic. Then I guess we must conclude that both Wilson and House are also dangerously psychotic because their pranks also included the risk of injury. Not that I have a problem with that conclusion...

really who gives a flying poop about Taub. I do.

And it feels like all Kutner does is bitch and moan. Yes, they seem to have wiped out the high-risk, experience-seeking streak that drew a lot of us to him in the first place. Now he has become as grim and exasperated as Cameron used to be. It's only been a couple of episodes since Kutner was revealed as running an illicit House second diagnosis web site, so I hardly think they've forgotten that. Besides, Kutner was the one who was first to express sympathy for Amber and want to say goodbye to her. It's perfectly in character for him, who shows his emotions on his sleeve, to be the one who openly expresses concern when it's obvious that something is wrong with Thirteen. I like that about him. He's a great balance of pure fun and also empathy (without the cloying faux sweetness of a certain former fellow).

really who gives a flying poop about Taub. I love Taub actually. His quiet understated presence is an asset, IMHO. I also like that he is closer in age to House, Wilson, Cuddy, etc. (or so he seems) and had an established practice. It gives him a different viewpoint to the rest of the fellows. I've enjoyed the small looks we've gotten into his private life and I look forward to more. He's one of the few characters who *has* a private life on this show. The rest of them seem to find it hard to maintain relationships or they have relationships with their colleagues. Taub has maintained a loving, albeit problematic, life with his wife who he obviously cares very deeply about to the point of giving up his lucrative practice to keep her. It's interesting to see another perspective.

Then I guess we must conclude that both Wilson and House are also dangerously psychotic because their pranks also included the risk of injury. Not that I have a problem with that conclusion... It's not just the pranks but Cuddy's rationale I find incomprehensible and downright certifiable. With House and Wilson pranking each other I always understand what the other is trying to get at. Cuddy not only distorted her rationale for coming back (and Cameron's for not sticking around) but honestly thought what she was doing to House was sinking to his level. Delusional.

Agree zumi and kittylugnut about that fall. I too watched that a number of times and it is really a beautifully done fall and the angle is terrific. He even ends up with the cane positioned right in front of him. Great camera angle too. I'm a huge fan of Buster Keaton, master of physical comedy, and this was up there in that league, great height and air then slap the floor with both hands to absorb the shock. Then, that little twisty hop he does to get up fast without putting weight on the injured leg. That's the stuff that wins you a SAG award! This episode reaffirms my faith in the writers: the continuity here was a real pleasure. Blue! Loved that so much. I was as unspoiled as I could be and it really made the show so much more enjoyable for me. Spoilers raise false expectations and that messes with my fun. Anyway, it was interesting to see that they had not forgotten about Wilson just because he wasn't on screen much for a while. And his sort of weird efforts to be helpful in the last few eps start to make sense. He has always been a dark character pretending to be ok and I think he loved Amber so much because she saw that dark side and accepted it, understood it and loved him wholly. He's still grieving in a kind of unhealthy way but he's lost his center which he had so briefly with Amber. At work he's trying to do what Amber taught him about not getting tied up with House's drama or Cuddy's, but meddling with their lives albeit with good intentions instead of facing his own "stuck" situation is not helping. Another interesting shade to that is in a previous episode when House says that a person tends to do a really good job at work when the rest of their life is falling apart: work becomes a life raft where they can put all of their energies. That seems to describe Wilson particularly well right now. I wouldn't be surprised to see him leave again. But, the tv show won't want to lose Wilson, so even if he does, he'd come back some way. Kutner seems ok to me, but he is going through the House transformation process. The fellows seem to go in and either transform into healthy independent folks (Cam and Chase), get stuck with their own inability to see through their own issues, blaming House (Foreman), are not affected at all (Taub, prettty much) or are so overwhelmed with their own issues, can't learn what House can teach. The point is that working with House changes people. Kutner seems all happy-go-lucky but we've learned he was orphaned as a child and was a bully in school, so it seems likely the easygoing part is more pragmatism than good nature. When House pokes him in the right spot, there's a bitterness there that Kutner doesn't show otherwise. So lots of layers, contradictions, ethical dilemmas, false fronts, fakery, life choices pitting personal happiness against the greater good. House certainly seems less of an ass when people around him drop their social niceties. Cuddy's way meaner than he ever was. A really fascinating mix. Thanks, House writers!

I have a speculation on that; I'll take it to the Speculation (No Spoilers) thread.

Delusional. It's okay to prank someone when you want them to get a divorce or you're happy that they're back, but if you do it when you're mad at them, then you're psychotic? House pranked the heck out of Wilson (and was a jerk to him) because he couldn't simply sit him down and talk to him about the fact that he thought Wilson needed to move on with his life. That seems like roughly the same level to me. But Cuddy did actually apologize afterward, so I agree they're not that similar. The fact that she was confused (or lying to herself) about her motives is really not new for the show or any of the characters.

When you're mad at them for psychotic reasons, yes. House is a jerk. I'm surprised everyone in the hospital isn't mad at him 100% of the time.

I didn't really get into this episode - I'm out of phase (not 28 days off , but more like 25 hours off). Seriously, I can't seem to get into the right mindset for House at 8PM on a on Monday. I didn't even remember until 10 after - luckily my DVR did. Cuddy-as-trickster did not work for me - it seemed totally OOC. When Wilson sawed House's cane, we knew why (House literally asked for it, or something like it) and he and we knew he deserved it. Not this time, though. Cuddy is all over the map with House: steely and determined, then befuddled and soppy. I used to respect her (even if I disagreed with some of her stances), but now I think of her as incompetent, unreliable and just mean, which is sad. She's trying to be like House - but she can't outsmart him, she can only try to emulate his cruel streak. Writers - decide on a Cuddy personality and go with it!

Poeia- 02-03-2009

One thing that struck me was the continuity of Foreman's need to play God and receive credit for it. His decision to change Thirteen's meds (from a placebo to an unproven, experimental drug) without asking her because he wanted to be the knight in shining armor who risked his career for her brought back memories of his final goodbye in S3. Foreman: I don't want to solve cases, I want to save lives. House: Do you think she cares? Do you think the husband cares? Do you think the children she can now have because of me are going to care why I saved her? Foreman: I care. House: About yourself. About your own ego! You're the selfish bastard, not me. It's why you took so much pleasure in drawing out this little goodbye of yours for the last 3 weeks, wasn't for me, wasn't for anyone, sure as hell didn't help anyone.

Housecall- 02-03-2009

I really found last nights episode uninteresting.

maya- 02-03-2009

I'll give this episode a B. I expected it to be much worse based on the spoilers. I like that Cuddy realized that she wanted to come back to work and that she was trying to run from it by blaming House. Loved Wilson calling Cuddy out on it. Great to see House/Wilson together. And House/Cuddy still have chemistry. But I really, really wish they hadn't written it the way they did with the pain and the elevators and the trip wires. Wilson made me tear up both when he spoke with the PoTW about Amber and also when he washed the cup. :crying: RSL is amazing with the emotional scenes, isn't he? But I didn't buy the scene in which he lectured her about quitting. It was pretty poorly written. I am so exhausted with the 13/14 stuff. EX-HAUS-TED. Its boring and wildly implausible. And they have zero chemistry. ZE-RO. 13 becomes creepy when she does her sexy talk with Foreman. And I really could have done without being treated to the sight of his nipples. And when did House turn into Cupid? If he mentions the word love again I am going to throw something at the screen. They've turned him into a bloody Foreteen shipper. I am not buying that he's thinking about either Stacy or Cuddy. I've been having a hard time figuring out where Kutner is coming from of late. Last episode he was suddenly challenging House and opposing a risky procedure and this episode I almost felt like he had a personality transformation when he called Foreman out on being a hypocrite. BTW, someone up thread mentioned that they thought they heard House calling Kutner Deepak. Yes, he did. I am sure its the name his biological parents gave him because its Indian. Liked the scenes with Taub and his wife. I can see why he loves her. Nice acting there by both of them. Goes to show that short scenes, written realistically and well acted can be so effective in helping us learn more about a character and relating to them. :thumb up: Finally, HL was awesome in this episode. I mean he always is but for some reason he seemed even more awesome than usual. ETA: She could sneak into his apartment and untune his piano. She could get him subscriptions to gardening magazines. Fill his office with balloons. Shave him while he's asleep. Steal all the shoelaces from his sneakers. Poeia, I love your suggestions because I can see them really annoying House. I wish they'd written it this way.
