I was actually wondering if he had a plate or something under his chest in the CPR scene. I was trying to tell if RSL was just restricting his blows or if maybe HL had some sort of padding on. Yes, I wondered about that too, but IIRC it was filmed from a low angle and it struck me that RSL was likely pounding on a dummy wearing HL's clothes: he was really putting some muscle in those blows.

DrSpaceman- 05-18-2008

LOL, though I tested on my leg (obsessive much?) and I think it can look like you're pounding hard as long as you pull back on the force at the last second. You still end up contacting but it's pretty light. The dummy though makes most sense.

The stripper's choice of animals in the opening scene was a bit odd. Cat, bird, rhino, monkey, goldfish. Who the hell is going to say Rhino unless you have Discovery Channel on the brain? Anyways, the first letter of each is C, B, R, M, and G. So... Cutthroat Bitch Relapsing Myasthenia Gravis There must be other possibilities. Yeah, I know it's a stretch. Something to ponder however.

Au contraire. If I'm giving a lap dance to a guy that looks like Hugh Laurie, you can bet the only thing on my mind would be "big horn." Rhino makes perfect sense.

Then again, she does have trouble naming five animals. Loud music, possibly a bit of sound proofing and a paying customer. With all the discussion of sight one thing that was overlooked was sound. In the stripper bar scene there is the sound of siren. Since we as the viewers are dumped in the scene with House it seems that this is partof the music playing inside. It is revealed that the sirens belong to the chaos going on outside.

The missing muscles are used to raise the leg and what's left isn't enough to support his body. This is kind of going back to the leg discussion, but I was wondering how this relates to House's running after his coma...do you need those muscles to raise/move your leg forward when you run? (I don't know; haven't taken any anatomy/kinesiology classes yet :) but I've had soreness in my thighs after running) The ketamine treatment helped with his pain, but it couldn't regrow muscle, right?

NightOwl- 05-19-2008

Right, the ketamine helped with the pain; it did not regrow muscle. (I don't think anything could cause muscle to regenerate. But I'm not a doctor.)

Namaste- 05-19-2008

The quadriceps is only part of the muscle groups that is used when walking, standing or running. The hamstring also plays a big part and the quad is actually four muscles (as the name implies) which has more to do with lifting the leg than the forward motion. I'm not a doctor, but between research on fics and my own knee/foot/leg issues, I've got a rough handle on it. If you want to isolate what the quads do specifically, lie on your back with your left knee bent and left foot on the floor, your right leg straight. Then lift the right leg. That motion to lift the leg higher than the hips is solely the quad muscles. Now in walking, you're not lifting the leg above the level of the hip, so the quads play a part, but they're not the sole muscle at work, and other muscles can and do play a part. HL actually does a fairly good job with being consistent in this in that whenever you see him lying down or moving his legs off a desk, he uses his hand to lift the leg, which would be the point where House's quads can't handle the task. So as it comes to the running ... much of House's chronic pain comes from nerve damage, and the nerves apparently kick into overdrive when the damaged muscles are used. Because of the pain, he doesn't use the muscles that are there but damaged, leading to atrophy of the remaining muscles. Once the ketamine blocked the nerve damage, he could actually build up the muscles that remained -- probably for the first time since the infarction. (I personally believe that House never fully knew how much muscle damage there actually was because of the nerve damage.) Wilson mentioned the atrophy issue in passing during "Meaning." Which is a long way of saying that no, the Ketamine didn't regrow muscle, however it did allow him to finally use and build up the muscles that were left to him.

The song used in the stripper scene is Chingy's "Nasty Girl," and the sirens are a part of the song's sound effects. (I really like that song, don't judge me!)

True, but I think Trooper's point was that the song worked both ways. Considering that there are about a million strip clubs worthy songs that don't contain sirens in them.

Exactly and this episode was very much focused on the senses. House relies on his sight, his sense of smell but hearing is overlooked. It's not by concidence that most vets will tell you a sound will put them back into combat yet sound is completly overlooked in thsi episode.

As there were no answers in Wilson's Heart, we now have all summer to argue about which scenes were real and which were hallucinations. That should keep us busy.

Thank you Namaste! That is the first reasonable explanation I have seen about the "running on a damaged leg" issue. My daughter is a nurse and she concurs with everything you said, we just couldn't express it as well as you did. To expand a little, it is canon that House spent months, either 2 or 3 I can't remember, in PT. Knowing how obsessive he is and how he must have felt being pain free, he probably did more muscle work than a normal patient would do in a year! It makes me crazy when so many people use this issue to complain about realism, as in "If they expect us to believe House can run on a leg without enough muscle, or that he regrew muscle, they can expect us to believe anything." Thanks for giving me a chance to finally address this, I am shutting up now, please feel free to get back on topic.

This is mostly just silliness, but a viewer with a good eye over on the house_md LJ community spotted some graffiti that has to do with our favorite oncologist in the bathroom scene...
