3.15 Half-Wit From tv.com:
House encounters a brain-damaged musical prodigy with inexplicable abilities while the team faces serious concerns about House's own health.

I think the ending of this particular episode inspired a lot of fanfic, fodder and general analysis. I'm surprised this isn't a highly active thread.

*shrug*
I keep forgetting that the opening credits are shot here. I usually skip them, so They're over so fast that I go to scene 3 by accident.
Still, a great episode. :D

Sure, except for that one scene. :)
And I don't mean Cameron, I mean Wilsons final speach. I'm not sure if it's Wilson or RSL. but I just can't stand it. That stupid laugh, the ridiculous gesture.
It also strikes me everytime I watch it how little Wilson seems to be affected by the whole idea his friend might be terminally ill. I know he doesn't show his feelings much, but this is an extreme situation. I don't understand it.
Hail the Random- 02-10-2008
I think it might be because Wilson deals with cancer every day, so he's good at being kind of blasé about it.
galaxygirl- 02-10-2008
He probably just cries himself to sleep, like the rest of us ;)

I thought I was the only one. That scene, and especially the gesture, was such a sour note in an otherwise magnificent episode, IMO. It was just so artificial.

sssh, Misere, I've had the feeling for some time now that you and I may be the only two in House fandom who are not exactly Wilsons (or RSL's I haven't figured that out yet) biggest admirers.
Bessie Mae- 02-10-2008
Me three! Me three! Well, I actually do like RSL, but I am definitely not a Wilson fan by any stretch of the imagination.
Taiga- 02-10-2008
I thought it was weird too. But it was clearly written that way: since House asked repeatedly "why are you laughing?", Wilson had to be laughing. RSL or HL, I don't remember which, said in an interview that the two of them don't ad-lib.

The only three bits I can't stand from this episode:
1.
---------
CAMERON: It's a gumma in your brain. It's very rare not to be in the liver and I'm really glad we never slept together, but—
HOUSE: We would have used a condom and I don't have syphilis. My VDRL was negative—
---------
What was Cameron going to say after "but"? But at least we didn't risk you giving me syphillis? Her statement strikes me as odd and out of place.
2.
---------
FOREMAN: We just told you you're not gonna die. You should be making out with Cameron!
---------
I realize Foreman didn't yet know that Cameron and Chase were getting it on at this time, but what a totally crappy, tacky, out-of-place thing to say.
3.
---------
HOUSE: I didn't! I wanted the guys in Boston to think that I had cancer. I wanted the guys who were gonna implant a cool drug right into pleasure center of my brain to think that I had cancer!
CAMERON: You faked cancer to get high?
HOUSE: I'm going to bed.
---------
I do not think he faked cancer to get high; I think he faked cancer to try a new method of pain relief. I wish House had explained that better; I wish he'd responded to Cameron. Because I think it leaves him looking bad.
Other than all that, I love this episode.

I agree, I, too, think that's what he was trying to do, but I can also see why he wouldn't be interested in trying to explain, I mean, it's not like anyone at all is ever taking his pain seriously, so they'd probably not get it anyway.
NightOwl- 02-19-2008
Yea, I guess I understand why House didn't bother trying to explain. I just wish it had been explained for the viewing public. Because at the risk of seeming condescending... I'm willing to bet that a large percentage of viewers—especially casual viewers—bought Cameron's explanation. I guess I shouldn't care about that. But it sort of offends my sensibilities, for a couple reasons:
–There are easier ways to get high. House went to all that trouble in search of pain relief that would be healthier for his liver.
–Cameron is not the House-whisperer. In fact, I often think she is the anti-whisperer.
Hibernia- 02-19-2008
I agree, it would have been better if the whole thing was explained a bit better to the more casual viewers. I'm hoping some viewers will get thinking a bit further when they pay attention to the way House limps to the door, though - it's even painful to watch. And yeah, Cameron may be a lot of things, that I won't go into right now, but a House-whisperer - no. It's really strange though, all of them are doctors, you'd think they'd have come across a pain patient or two along the way...
Poeia- 02-19-2008
I do not think he faked cancer to get high; I think he faked cancer to try a new method of pain relief. I wish House had explained that better; I wish he'd responded to Cameron. Because I think it leaves him looking bad. The only time House defends himself is if the other person's misconception will interfere with how he wants to treat a patient. Otherwise, he allows people to think whatever crap they think about him.
It's totally within character -- he doesn't look for the approval of others -- but it does him a real disservice. There are plenty of times when spending a few seconds explaining himself would make his life less complicated in the long run.
