3.12 One Day, One Room From tv.com:
While House is forced to work full-time in the clinic and deal with a rape victim who insists on confiding with him, Cameron deals with a terminal cancer patient trying to take advantage of her state of mind.

Oh how I LOATHE this episode! The ranking game reminds me of how much I hate it. Let me count the ways.
1. This episode was obviously written by men who don't have a freaking clue about rape. And I could sum it up with that statement, but I'll go on anyway becasue I've really got nothing better to do at the moment.
2. Completely irresponsible handling of her options. This is not about abortion itself, but about the presentation of her options. She had a legitimate belief system wherein she said she didn't want to have an abortion, but House brow-beat her into having one anyway. Keeping the baby or giving it up for adoption are choices too and her freedom of choice wasn't respected. I don't believe adoption was even mentioned. Acting like she came to her senses and did the right thing because she did what House thought was right was annoying and insulting to the many women who do have the strength to view a baby as THEIR baby instead of a rapist's baby and go through with the pregnancy. A person who has just been raped needs counseling to help make that kind of decision, not someone telling them what to do that clearly conflicts with their own beliefs. It's not the abortion itself that bothered me as much as a doctor forcing his beliefs on the patient.
3. Irresponsible handling of the victim herself. Some moron doctor let her OD.
4. The most unsympathetic rape victim in the history of television. I thought her demanding of House's attention was annoying. It's as if after she had someone else's will forced upon her, she thought she had the right to force her will on someone else. She turned into an emotional rapist.
5. House's abuse story. Explaining House as "the way he is" due to abuse turns House into Emo!House instead of just a brilliant guy who likes to be right and not put up with other people's crap. Many super-smart people have terrible social skills. His intelligence alone is enough to explain his behavior. I prefer to think that Everybody Lies--including House and he just told the girl what she wanted to hear.
6. Cameron's side plot was boring, useless, and repetitive. Cameron has a thing with thinking that no one should die alone. We get it. We got it the first 19 times this was brought up.
7. Chase--who gave the most medically sound advice--was wallpaper in the episode. "Keep her asleep" is actually good medical advice. Being sedated would give her time to physically heal and let her process some of what had happened.
8. Not utilizing the character traits they have established. Chase might be able to reach the victim on her theological issues about the pregnancy wasn't even consulted about that. Given his background in seminary, he was the one doctor who might understand where she was coming from and helped her make the right decision for her from both a medical and theological standpoint.
What I liked about this episode:
The useless Cameron side story and the worst main plot in House's three seasons both rolled into one episode, making it very easy to skip the worst of the worst with one flick of the remote control!

If I squint I can find some nice things in this episode. Love WIlson's roleplaying remark, loved the clinic patients except for rape girl
things I hate:
I hate the House being abused by his father story, HATE it. Why can't he just be a bastard without this kind of baggage, why can he be a complete bitch to everyone for two years and everyone loves it without a reason and now all the sudden there has to be a big revelation. ugh.
Cameron side story. 'Nuf said.
I didn't give a crap about the rape victim, I'm completely puzzled how the actress ended up with an Emmy nomination.
I'll just youtube the 'roleplay' conversation and will forget about the rest of this episode. Worst episode of the show by a mile, and that's something considering with my hate towards Sleeping Dogs Lie.

Ugh! The worst episode ever!
Just two things I can rewatch: Wilson (all his scenes, but specially the park scene) and Chase's advice. Nothing else was worth my time
ETA: An Emmy nomination?????

...Well, there were some nice scenes between House and Wilson. And Chase had some funny lines.
On repeat viewing, I don't hate it as much as I thought I did. Still don't like it, though...

I tried to rewatch it when USA aired it a few weeks ago, I really tried, but I had to switch the channel to something more uplifting, like Intervention ;)

Could it be because ODOR really sucked?
saara_zaara- 08-13-2007
Yup, season three is going to be notable for having probably some of the most universally hated episodes of the series IMO - & this is probably the number 1 one. Shame really, the concept was a good one, but they really should have made it "One Room", ditched the B story & focused on just House & Eve (& maybe recast her - I've always thought the PotW girl from Insensitive would have been a better choice).

You know, it was a good concept, but the writing just sucked. I'm not even sure who wrote it, but I'm convinced it was a couple of utterly clueless men. They bring in some good concepts and then don't follow through. If the girl had theological issues, why not consult Chase who might actually treat her beliefs with respect? Maybe they meant for the whole episode to be about forcing one's will on another person. The girl got raped. She forced House to meet her demands. House forced his ideas about the pregnancy on her. Mr. Dying Guy forced his needs on Cameron. They all sucked.

David Shore wrote it.
I mean...it certainly wasn't another Three Stories. There were a couple of good lines, though.
saara_zaara- 08-13-2007
The one & only David Shore! (& I have the feeling its the only s3 ep he wrote).

I just like how it spells out ODOR, it might be the best thing about the whole damn thing.
I agree that the idea was good, it was crappy writing in my opinion. I find it interesting that people seem to either hate it or love it. I guess the Emmy people loved it. No idea why.
And I still hate Cameron(I have the compulsive need to say this every now and then)

Could you clarify?

I remember reading that it was one of the five episodes the House producers submitted for the best drama Emmy nomination.
I was wrong previously about the actress who played Eve's nomination, she submitted it, didn't get nominated, but for some reason I remember seeing it. Hmm, it doesn't make me happy when I get my award trivia wrong.

Nope - we don't know House's episode submissions yet (well, we know that Half-Wit is there, but we don't know the other 5). It'd be terrible if they did submit OD,OR. Just why?
