1.18 Babies & Bathwater From tv.com:
While House and his team scramble to discover what's causing brain and kidney dysfunction in a pregnant woman, Vogler is working to get House fired after House's pharmaeutical speech. House determines the illness, but the woman and her husband must struggle with an emotional and heartbreaking choice: choose between her or that of her unborn child. Vogler calls for a vote to remove House, but when Wilson refuses to make the vote unanimous, Vogler threatens to take his money if Wilson isn't voted out. Finally, Cuddy must take a stand against Vogler.

My favourite ep of season 1. Way before the sacrifices of Tritter arc we get to see how much House means to Wilson. Wilson giving up his job - the only other thing that matters to him - for House. When even Cuddy picked the 100 million over House, Wilson wasn't having it. And oh, the moment when Vogler orders Wilson out of the boardroom and says This vote is whether to dismiss Dr. James Wilson - I was on tenterhooks the first time I saw that.
Ah, the ep where we got to see Wilson packing up his office, where that most fantastic exchange took place:
I've got no kids, my marriage sucks; I've only got two things that work for me: this job and this stupid, screwed-up friendship, and neither mattered enough to you to give one lousy speech.
They matter. If I could do it all again -
You'd do the same thing.
Other reasons I love this ep:
There's no Cameron! Sorry Cameron fans but I really didn't miss her at all.
I was actually really moved by the POTW dilemma, really sad when she died, and really felt for the husband. The POTW is usually just annoying background to me, so this is quite something.

Nice to find someone, other than me, that love this episode more than Three Stories :)
WORD for everything you said about it!
hwshipper- 08-14-2007
Thanks - yes, I've always been a bit 'meh' about Three Stories (too much Stacy & not enough H/W!)

Yeah, I've never understood why Three Stories is such a beloved episode. It bored me.
But Babies and Bathwater is great. The whole "they matter" scene was pure love. I loved how House seemed a little bit panicked when he asked Wilson what he was doing when he's packing up his office. House didn't want him to go, awwwww.
That was one of like two moments in S1 where I really felt the love, where I felt they were truly best friends as opposed to just buddies. The other being at the end of Histories.
Plus no Cameron, I'm not seeing a downside here

See, I've viewed that episode more as an artistic/indie episode of the show. It's non-linear storytelling in a linear medium. It jumps all over the timeline as opposed to telling the story from point A to point B, and that is more what was appealing about it and earned the Emmy.
And, it's interesting that this early in the show, they were able to function without one person on the team, whereas come season three, it's impossible for them to do that anymore. And it's not that they've bonded as much, it's just more that they're so predictable/House-like by then.

Ah, yup - my favourite episode of Seaosn 1. Honestly wonderful. Big fat word to everything above (though I do love Three Stories, because I'm a big backstory whore).

I love hearing from everyone with the same taste in eps as me!
(though I do love Three Stories, because I'm a big backstory whore).
Oh I am also the biggest timeline & backstory whore (having spent far too much of my life recently writing my own mammoth one) but I'd say I appreciate Three Stories for this, rather than love it. Like arizonamyrie says, its interesting artistically, and I do remember the thrill I got the moment I realised House was talking about himself.... but its just not in the Babies & Bathwater (or Detox, or DIYD) league as far as season 1 eps go.
I was about to worry about being OT talking about Three Stories in this thread, but hey if 407 can do it...
LightMyCandle- 08-14-2007
I love backstory too and that part was interesting but on the whole and in comparison to Babies and Bathwater, Histories, DIYD, and Poison, it fell very short for me in terms of S1 eps.

Three Stories fascinates me, but I don't love it.
Personally I like more linear storytelling in tv shows. And B&B has a very moving story and great character development. Plus the whole H/W thing that I love so much! No, I'm not bias at all!

I like Three Stories, but I don't love it and don't really understand the universal praise as best House Episode ever. But that's just me.
I love B&B. The no Cameron thing is awesome because I didn't even miss her. I love that Wilson was the only one to defend House in the board vote, I hate that Cuddy didn't wake up until it was almost too late. She should have seen this coming instead of staring herself blind on the 100 million.
The House/Wilson scene in Wilson's office is pure love. It's one of my favorite H/W moments ever on the show. The acting of both HL and RSL is perfect in that scene.
arizonamyrie- 08-14-2007
I loved that scene too galaxygirl. It showed the inner-workings of the House-Wilson friendship, and how tight they actually were.
I'm wondering, if House had someone/thing other than Wilson, how would Vogler have gone after him differently? Vogler had such authority over House as everything he has revolves around that hospital. If there were more than just the hospital, what would have changed?
407- 08-14-2007
Ah yes, hwshipper, but you should learn that I am exempt from the rules  Don't mess with Tritter, you know.
Anyways, I honestly do love Three Stories - it's awesome (and I also prefer the three little med students in that episode to CCF sometimes), but yeah, it doesn't even come close to B&B (or Detox, for that matter).
That scene in Wilson's office was just beautifully down. I love that House is taking Wilson's stuff back out of the box - that subtle little detail just completely makes the scene for me. If I ever decided to order my favourite House/Wilson scenes (it would take me about a year, as I am the most undecisive person ever), that scene would be right at the top. Just, I cannot praise it enough.
AZ - Vogler had nothing on Tritter () and so I doubt he cared at all about House past his importance to the hospital. With Vogler, it was all about running a cost-effective business. Vogler didn't really go after Wilson because he was important to House, rather because he was an obstacle on his way to getting a House-free hospital. Even if House had something/one outside of the hospital, nothing would have changed. I think Vogler would have done exactly the same thing. He didn't really even attempt to find out about House's life outside PPTH anyway.

Yeah, I've never understood why Three Stories is such a beloved episode. It bored me.
Because I'm a non-linear storytelling and fractured-timeline whore.
This is also why I LOVE The Mistake. All the jumping in and out of timelines gives me a plotgasm.
407- 08-14-2007
Ooh, The Mistake was awesome. Yeah, Asynca, I agree. Non-linear is far too interesting.
This is all so OT, but hey - it's too early in the morning for me to mod properly. Bah.
