1.16 Heavy From tv.com:
House must fire one of his doctors and leaves them to think about it while they deal with an overweight 10-year old child who suffered a heart attack as the result of taking diet pills. House is also faced with a woman who won't accept surgery for a 30 lb. tumor because she wants to remain overweight.

Okay. This is weird. I'm watching the DVD and reading the transcript. When I got to when they came back from commercial after seeing Jessica's skin sores, the transcript says:
Cameron: Diet pills don’t cause skin necrosis.
Chase: Could be something related to the pills.
Cameron: Or not.
House: Or both. Diet pills brought her to us, we gave her the sores.
The the scene starts with
House: Diet pills brought her to us, we gave her the sores.
I checked it half a dozen times but the DVD isn't skipping (there) and I have the subtitles on. So, finally, I dug out my VCR tape. And the transcript is right. They cut 17 words off the DVD.
That makes no sense. I could understand if they added a few seconds on the DVD for something they had to cut for time for broadcast, but not the other way around. Is this the director's cut?

Sorry, posted accidentally in the wrong episode thread.

I love this episode, in part because I loved Chi MCBride as the villain and he so hit his stride in this one. And Chase is creepy (about the kid) and backstabbing his co-workers. And I am always a sucker for *sensitive!* Foreman.

Poeia, after I first read your post on this, I checked it out for myself. You're absolutely right about this... I wonder why they cut that from the DVD? Very odd.
mmp629, can you elaborate on what exactly was creepy about Chase here? I realize he pre-judged her, but I don't find that in itself to be creepy. Maybe I'm missing something.
mmp629- 04-04-2008
I found the vehemence with which Chase spoke about this 10 year old's health and weight to be extremely creepy. He seemed to be actually sneering about it. I thought it was an interesting contrast to the compassion he showed to the nun with the copper poisoning.

Creepy as in "causing an unpleasant feeling of fear or unease" (from the Oxford American Dictionary) or creepy as in unusually insensitive? Because, while he was insensitive about the issue, I wasn't scared of what he said. Chase actually makes a good point about obesity in America, although it shouldn't have come into conflict with the care of his patient.
NightOwl- 04-04-2008
I guess I don't see that as creepy. He was mainly making a statement about obesity in general. Sorry, but obesity is not always due to a disease, as it turned out to be on this episode; in most cases, it is preventable. And I think Chase was just referring to the general trend that people don't take responsibility for their actions. Parents are responsible for teaching their children healthy eating habits and for encouraging physical activity. (My husband and I take this very seriously with our children. We're not extreme; we let them eat junk food, but they understand about moderation.)
Anyhow, I think Chase was just commenting on America, sloth, gluttony, etc.
Chase: Yes, I have. What I haven’t seen lately is a kid eating an apple or riding a bike. You Americans can’t even compete with the rest of the world in basketball anymore, unless, of course, it’s the type you play with a remote control on a big screen TV.

What can I tell ya? It caused me an unpleasant feeling of fear or unease because I didn't trust him to be nice to the little girl. And the look of contempt on his face when he is making these pronouncements about obesity -- yes, he has the moral and medical high ground - shocks me every time I watch this episode.
NightOwl- 04-04-2008
We've never seen Chase intentionally physically hurt a patient or say something hurtful to a patient.
Cameron, on the other hand...
I'll stop there because it's off-topic.
Chase has never once made me feel uncomfortable, except when he kissed the patient in "Autopsy." But obviously he was uncomfortable kissing her, and I never once got the vibe that his intentions were creepy there. His intentions were clearly innocent, and he clearly felt conflicted about it.

And yet he was nice to Jessica. I doubt that she or her mother had the slightest idea that Chase has a hangup about obesity.
Foreman and Cameron let their emotions negatively impact on how they act with the patient. Chase does not.

I'm a fan of JS and Chase, but Chase was a total jerk in this episode. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

No, Chase lets his dick negatively impact his patient care...I think he was involved in x-raying a wrong leg...
In any case, I still say Vogler was a truly wonderful bad guy. It's so great seeing him go at it with House and Cuddy, and attempt to manipulate the cottages.

Hmm, don't think we can let Cameron off on that type of behaviour either :D Something about a sleep lab and a roll around on a patient's bed? And stealing meth from a patient?
I think Chase is being judgemental about but not with the little girl. We've never seen Chase treat a patient unprofessionally. We've just seen him have strong opinions behind the scenes about obesity.
mmp629- 04-05-2008
I don't get it - or maybe I do. Because I'm Cameron fan, apparently I'm not allowed to have issues with Chase's behavior in this episode without being scolded about what Cameron does in other episodes. I give up.
Chipmunk_love- 04-05-2008
You were the one who brought up what happened in Control! What others are saying is that, yes, Chase, as you so rightly pointed out, was incredibly judgmental in this episode. However, unlike two of colleagues, it never factors into patient care. And then the shiitake mushrooms hit the fan.
