1.01 Pilot From tv.com:
A young kindergarten teacher, Rebecca Adler, who suffers from seizures collapses in her classroom after uncontrolled gibberish slips out her mouth while she is about to teach her students. She is taken to Dr. House and his team of experts who identify it might be a tumor, and she might have only a week to live.

I was just rewatching the Pilot and this exchange made me laugh:
House: You pulled my authorization.
Cuddy: Yes. Why are you yelling?
House: No MRIs, no imaging studies, no labs.
Cuddy: You also can’t make long distance phone calls.
House: If you’re gonna fire me, have the guts to face me.
Cuddy: Or photocopies. You’re still yelling.
House: I’m angry! You’re risking a patient’s life.
Cuddy: I assume those are two separate points.
House: You showed me disrespect. You embarrassed me. And as long as I work here you have…
House complaining about Cuddy showing him disrespect. That's a good one.

This is the Cuddy I missed, the Cuddy who called House on his shit. The one who not only pulled his rights, but also gave the snark back. I miss that Cuddy. Can she come back and play?

Cuddy in the pilot was a mix of brash coolness and kind of bewildering lameness. She parries with House with ease but then has to go research to figure out who the philosopher Jagger is before she can come back with something. It flummoxed me. Who the hell has to look up Mick Jagger?

Well, if we have to believe that Heather Mills had no idea who Paul McCartney was when she first met him(I don't buy it, but that's beside the point), it might be possible for someone not to know who Mick Jagger is.

It never occurred to me that she was serious. It was a snarky comeback (although she loses a few points for not answering him immediately.) It should have been:
Cuddy: Your reputation won’t last if you don’t do your job. The clinic is part of your job. I want you to do your job.
House: But, as the philosopher Jagger once said, “You can’t always get what you want.”
Cuddy should have said: But, as I recall from when I studied his works in college, he also said "if you try sometimes you get what you need." I need you to do your job.

I always thought that she knew the philosopher Jagger, but maybe she didn't know the lyrics of the song. Or maybe I'm completely wrong...

For the first time in quite a while, I watched the Pilot last night. Has anyone else been intrigued by the color in this episode? I really love the vibrant, intense colors of the show, and that intense degree of color was blatantly absent in the Pilot. Instead, most of the color was a mix of orange and gray scale. Muted blues popped up too. It occurred throughout the entire episode, not just during the Mr. Orange Clinic Patient. It seemed like a stylistic choice, but I'm not sure if it was. Was this Pilot (or are pilot episodes in general) filmed at a lower quality, in case the show wasn't well-received, or was this strange color palette indeed a deliberate choice? I'm so curious about it.

I always figured she was just being snarky, but didn't House snark and run? I am trying to recall teh scene and I thought he pulled the Jagger line and then left the room before Cuddy could reply. I could be wrong, my DVDs are inbound to Korea so I can't see the episode to watch.
Poeia- transcript queen...I await the answer :)

He's snarking and running the whole time and Cuddy follows. This time, however, she gets stumped. Or bested. Or whatever. And then many scenes later she admits she's looked into it.
To me, it just comes across as a weak comeback. Poeia's scene is better.
I suspect it was meant to tell us something a little bit about Cuddy. This is our first introduction of her. That she's of a particular age demographic and yet doesn't recognize one of the most famous names and lyrics in rock and roll tells us that she's....kind of lame.

Yes, but knowing House's tastes, he'd have to think that's lame.
Not into rock?
Scoff!

Troops - the transcripts at clinic_duty are pretty good. There are some missed or misunderstood words, but you'll always get the gist of the dialog. (There is also some of the funkiest punctuation in history. Seven or 8 senstences strung together with commas, but no commas after subjunctive clauses.)
Here are the 2 Jagger references.
Cuddy: Look, Dr. House, the only reason that I don’t fire you is because your reputation still worth something to this hospital.
House: Excellent. We have a point of agreement. You’re not going to fire me.
Cuddy: Your reputation won’t last if you don’t do your job. The clinic is part of your job. I want you to do your job.
House: But, as the philosopher Jagger once said, “You can’t always get what you want.”
(end of scene)
later...
House: You showed me disrespect. You embarrassed me. And as long as I work here you have…
Cuddy: Is your yelling designed to scare me? Because I’m not sure what it is I’m supposed to be scared of. More yelling? That’s not scary. That you’re gonna hurt me? That’s scary, but I’m pretty sure I can outrun you. Oh, I looked into that philosopher you quoted – Jagger. And you’re right, “You can’t always get what you want.” But as it turns out, “if you try sometimes you get what you need.”
House: So, because you want me to treat patients, you’re not letting me treat patients.
Cuddy: I need you to do your job.
~~~~~
Shutterbug, the entire episode is in orange. At one point, Cuddy looks like she used QT. (For those of you who are too young to remember it, QT was an early self-tanner that made users look like they were going for the camouflage-in-a-Florida-grove look.) I have no idea why Bryan Singer went for that look. It can't be any cheaper to orange filters on the lamps than decent colored ones.
And nobody else seems to think it's funny that House was upset at Cuddy showing him disrespect.
